Generation 2 Celebrate

As my webinar was coming to a close in about 15 min.; technological difficulties posed a challenge with my power point. Almost simultaneously, I noticed that my Mom was attempting to contact me via home and cell phone to inform me of my grandmother’s passing. Honestly, it was just like her to send a "sign"!

This blog entry is a tribute or celebration of her life.

Baba, Polish for grandmother, was one of the original "green" generation. From reusing Christmas gift wrap to milk cartons for storage of her famous soups, she saved & recycled just about anything. Growing up in tough times, her father was killed in a coal mining accident leaving her mother, who spoke little English, with 5 children. Being the oldest, at age 16, her responsibilities for supporting the family were quite a task in the 1930s. I can’t imagine the invisible weight she must have felt upon her shoulders.

This may have prepared her for her role as a single parent later on in life when she overcame an unwanted divorce, a rarity for her generation.

Proving resilient to hardship, she would continue to enjoy polka dancing, discussing politics, playing both bingo and the lottery, reading, cooking and supervising!

You may hear me tell the legendary stories ranging from spandex dresses to smuggling 7 UP to her in her room at Rebekah Manor as she was indeed a saucy ball of life, quite mischievous at times :)

I’m positive she is dsicussing politics with Tim Russert and laughing with George Carlin.

What a life, what a lady, what a generation to celebrate!

Jimmy Buffett

Fins to the left; fins to the right; it was a feeding frenzy of fellow Parrotheads in Raleigh, NC that night!

It has been awhile since I had the opportunity to re-visit "One Particular Harbor" and enjoy a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" while improving my eye/hand cordination with the bouncing beach balls that are a continuous tradition throughout the concert!

Cheers to you, Jimmy for entertaining us all of these years!

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!

Bone Marrow Match 4 my Dad
My dad, Lee Wilson, has been battling CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) for 12 years and has received various treatments ranging from his own stem cell replacement to various cocktails of chemotherapy. His warrior mentality and strength have not diminished, nor has his sense of humor.

This chronic disease has now advanced and a bone marrow replacement may be the only solution for him. The National Bone Marrow Donor Program, of which I’ve been involved in since his initial diagnosis, will not donate to individuals over age 60. My dad is 68.

I am not the perfect match, nor are other siblings.

Our options are now focused to find a match without a history of cancer to be tested via a special kit.

Bone Marrow Typing Test: What to Expect

1) If you are already registered in the National Bone Marrow Program, simply contact them for your records.

You may send them to:
Dr. John Lister
4815 Liberty Ave.
Pittsburgh, PA. 15224

National Bone Marrow Donor Program Contact Information
(800) 989-4438
http://www.marrow.org/

2) If NOT registered, you may request a kit from my Mom, Cecelia Wilson, via email lcpm3w@netzero.netThis kit will be sent to you.

3) Contents include the vial and packaging for mailing your blood sample that is taken at your physicians office. Most often, your HLA or typing, are not part of routine blood work or CBC work, however ifyou are due for a physical, what perfect timing!

4) Your investment to save a life, possibly $150. Based upon your insurance coverage, this test may or may not be covered.

5) You may want to attend a Red Cross Blood Drive or inquire when they have a Blood Drive pertaining to the National Bone Marrow Program. It is how I got into the system 12 years ago. I have yet to be contacted as a donor; although I’d donate to an otherwise healthy individual over the age of 60!

6) Any questions; please contact Cecelia Wilson as she is well informed with Dr. Lister.

Cancer doesn’t have an age restriction, unlike some resources.
Thank you for taking time from your life to invest in saving my dad’s.

PreViser & Your Practice

Now, dental hygienists can perform an effective, efficient, evidence-based screening protocol for their patients and dissolve the perception of "just a cleaning" utilizing PreViser.

The guessing game we’ve played pertaining to treatment options, specialist referrals and preventative therapies is finally over. Whether you are a dental professional or patient, this software clearly communicates both the risk of both future disease and current disease state per individual’s health history, lifestyle risk factors + current oral health conditions.

Each of the three essential screenings, periodontal, oral cancer & caries risk produce a "score." This score is key to monitoring your patients progress toward health.

Options for report review include either clinical or patient friendly format in addition to providing doctors with a PAR, practice analysis report, within their hygiene department.

Today’s hygiene departments are perceived as health & wellness oriented; is yours?

Sad Steeler Fan

Picture this; it is a Saturday night, the air is crisp and the fans are ready to cheer their home team to a victory fas they wave their terrible towels. Okay, I admit I was doing the same, from my home in NC.

Why the excitement? It’s the NFL playoffs ~ Steelers vs. Jaguars.

The black and gold played like they were black and blue.

Hard to watch these pro’s perform like "average Joe’s"

My terrible towel was saturated from my wiping my tears!

Care Credit

You would have to have been hit by rock or just come out from under one if you are not aware of the benefits Care Credit extends to our dental patients in receiving care they need and/or want without enduring the fate of the financial grim reaper.

Knowing this; I believed that I would escape the "financial fate" when faced with my pet’s surgery as I have a Care Credit card. To my surprise, the Veterinary Hospital did not offer this option. Here was breakdown for the proposed treatment.  Dakota, my furbaby, had a mass that (1) needed to be removed, (2) sent to a lab for diagnosis then (3) placed on several medications following treatment.  Based upon the diagnosis; further treatment could follow. Your heart strings are tugged tight as you can’t even believe you are going to allow the thought of "declining or delaying treatment"

How many other people are forced to decline routine or life changing care for their pet family members?

Considering a solution for defeating cost concern when challenged with treatment decisions,  Dakota’s Vet not only contacted Care Credit but also implemented this benefit immediately! Dakota had both the surgery recommended and a routine prophylaxis. Recovering swiftly, the mass was found to be a sizable tumor, which was benign.

Dakota and I would like to thank Bete Johnson & Bill Hanson.  You ROCK!

2007 BreathRx Hygienist of the Year

Have you ever imagined feeling appreciated beyond your expectations for your clinical work and/or contribution as a dental hygienist? Allow me to explain;

I was chosen as one of the "fab 5" finalists for the annual 2007 BreathRx Hygienist of the Year Award sponsored by Discus Dental and Modern Hygienist.

This past week was one of celebration ~ a celebration for being who we are, where we’ve come from and what we envision our role to be.

Personally, I’ve grown into a confident, compassionate survivor who will empower those whose character has been either in question or suffocated. I was told that I should give up speaking, writing, coaching and continue to endure the physical pain of full time clinical hygiene. My inner voice felt different, it has been a long journey and I’m still healing. My motto has driven me to promote; Take What You Learn and Make a Difference with IT!

Professionally, I intend to proceed with my quest in altering our patient’s perception of the hygiene appointment from "Just a Cleaning" to "Health & Wellness". Assisted Hygiene will become an accepted program to accomplish this within practices that are team centered; patient focused. My role will also transcend from our dental profession to consumer, corporate and other health professions.

A MAGNITUDE of thanks to the entire team of Modern Hygienist, Discus Dental and those behind the scenes for a well-planned, no detail missed, abolutely inspiring, magical, entertaining memory that will be thought of each time I hear the song "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield!

"Feel the rain on your skin; No one else can feel it for you; Only you can let it in; No one else, no one else can speak the words on your lips; Drench yourself in words unspoken; Live your life with arms wide open; Today is where your book begins; The rest is still unwritten."

Dog Attack

This past Sunday, I was excercising my furbabies (2 Siberian Huskies, Dakota age 11 and Nahla age 1) along my ususal route within the neighbor hood. We have leash laws in NC, although it seems as though some believe they are exempt from the law for various reasons.

This particular evening, I didn’t have my music playing in my ears for some reason. I did notice a pit bull was not leashed in its yard. It was playing with a young girl until it viewed its prey ~ my dog! As it launched from the yard into the road, it’s focus was on Nahla’s neck. The brawl had both dogs swirling around me when Nahla’s leash wrapped around my ankles causing me to fall hard to the ground.

My other dog, Dakota, along with a friend provided the distraction for me to get up in addition to releasing its grip on Nahla.

My right hand, elbow, knee & hip were badly bruised. Nahla lost some fur, however, her thick coat probably provided protection as well.

Upon filing a report, I found out this attack was not the first.

My challenge is; (1) Over come my anxiety or fear as I have not been able to walk past this house (2) Find some kind of protection for myself and furbabies that is not cumbersome

Today, I took them to the beach for our 3 mile trek. It was a treat to enjoy both the I-pod + excercise all of us without harm!

Finding Your Normal - Small Steps

This course of divorce has been broken down into small steps, ironically enough, those steps have assisted me in building my new "normal."

Since August of 2003, I have not been able to have my name on certain utilities due to company policy. The result was not only receiving and viewing the name of the man who walked out, but also paying those bills, thus assisting his credit for the past 4 years. This was difficult to do. Ask yourself, how would you solve this problem?

I’ve written many letters, spoken with many a customer service rep till a court order had to be set into place. This week January 26, 2007, I’m incredibly pleased to share that I will finally have my name on some accounts! All of that for local & long distance phone service!

This message is to encourage those of you who are building those small steps personally or professionally to know that perseverance and patience are incredibly rewarding. It may take some time, just like finding your "new" normal.

Stem Cells

One of the hottest topics this week in health news involves the advancements of harvesting stem cells.

The possibility of future cure’s for such conditions as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Diabetes, etc. seems to be within our grasp! Although this week’s announcement introduced us to stem cells found in amniotic fluid, I’ve recently read about a company called BioEden, a tooth cell bank.

Interestingly enough, the anterior baby teeth show promise for preserving these valuable cells. Amazing to think that we have the means available to potentially win against such devastating ailments. For more information; www.bioeden.com

Fighting Fat After Thirty

I realize it has been awhile since my previous post. I’ll catch up by manageable bits of information!

Attended a CE course a few weeks ago, Fighting Fat After Thirty, which was enlightening. In a nut shell, we must move it or lose it. Balanced diet, strength training/excercise have been the foundation for years, so why do we have such an epidemic in obesity?

It does become more of a challenge for us post thirty, however, find what works for you and stay committed, or be committed to health ailments later in life.

 Steelers won their season opener!

Hit & Run

Okay, let’s start off with the pre-season loss to both Vikings and Eagles. Although I would prefer the win, I realize the strategy behind pre-season. Ben will be in top shape!

Yesterday, while in VA. I witnessed a hit & run. This young driver was in reverse at a speed that was too fast. He attempted to back into a space and cut the wheel too soon, thus crunching the stationary vehicle. The driver had popped off his back panel of his car, got out, retrieved his panel and drove off. I observed him as I was walking into a business, silently hoping he would do the right thing. Neither of us said a word, it felt as though it was a showdown behind our stare. I continued to proceed into the building and inquired about the owner of the stationary vehicle. Turned out to be in the business next door. I reported what I saw to the owner with a semi tag, car and suspect description as well as provided my contact information.

No one was hurt, however, what has happened to honesty, responsibility and integrity?
